What is a Learning Contract?
Learning Contracts are a way to more carefully monitor your progress through the program, outlining achievement expectations for the next semester (for example, to pass certain courses, or maintain a certain GPA).
A Learning Contract may be issued if you fail an indicator course or your GPA falls below 1.7 (the threshold for Academic Probation defined by Policy AA39). If you do not meet the terms of your Learning Contract, the next step is usually a permanent program removal that may also extend to other, closely related programs.
Learning Contracts can, understandably, cause some anxiety. It’s important to note that a Learning Contract is not intended to be punitive – rather, the department is concerned that...
- The program you are currently in may not be a good fit.
- Now might not be the right time to commit to full-time studies.
- You may not have the appropriate supports in place to be academically successful. (We can help with that!)
So, consider a Learning Contract an opportunity to reflect, focus your attention, and learn more about all the College supports you can access. If you are concerned about how to improve your grades and meet the conditions of your Learning Contract, please speak with your Professors, Academic Advisor, or Student Success Specialist.
Note: Not all Advanced Technology programs issue Learning Contracts, but many do. If you’re unsure if your program follows a Learning Contract model, please ask your Academic Advisor/Student Progression Advisor for more information.
