If you are having a problem involving a professor in class, these are some recommended steps to take:
- Meet with the professor to explain the situation and your perspective (informal complaint). State the facts as well as you can, preferably in writing. You and the professor will discuss a possible resolution to your concerns. If your concern is resolved, then no further steps are required. If your concern has not been resolved, proceed to the next step.
- Submit a formal complaint. If your concerns have not been resolved through your meeting your professor, or if you feel uncomfortable approaching your professor, you can bring your concern to the Program Chair. At the meeting, provide the Chair with a written complaint that includes the following information (see policy SA03: Student Complaints Appendix 3 for the form template):
- Description of the complaint, including time and date of events
- Employees involved (e.g. professor’s name)
- Names of witnesses, if any
- Actions taken to date
- Solution sought
- Wait for the resolution from the Program Chair. The Chair will investigate your complaint and speak with the professor. They will then provide you with a written resolution. If appropriate, the Chair may arrange a meeting with you and the professor to discuss the situation and come up with a strategy.
If you require assistance to submit your complaint, or would like mediation when meeting with your Professor, you can contact the Ombudsman for support.
For more information about the formal process of lodging a complaint, please read policy SA03: Student Complaints.
